I have just put in an order for a new laptop computer and my preference would have been to buy a MacBook of better still a MacBook Pro. But I had to think abou what I wanted to do with the computer. In this case I want it mainly for matched betting and not for using with illustration and photography. I may consider having it dual bootable so I could do some CorelDraw if I feel like it. I will be using Ubuntu, the linux distribution as the main operating system as it is more secure and I really don’t want to use Windows. But as I say I might put Windows on secondary just for Corel.
I have been looking at Ubuntu on another computer today to see what it looks like. I used a live CD which allowed me to boot up into Ubuntu without changing anything on the computer - not my computer you see. It looks very nice indeed and it will be as secure as using a Mac. Linux is the basis for OSX on the Mac anyway.
I paid 400 Euro for the laptop which comes with Vista, which will be wiped clean as soon as I get it, ready to install Ubuntu. The MacBook would have cost me 1200 Euro. It is not as the numbers suggest that Mac are expensive because we are not comparing like for like. If I would have priced a PC with the same specs as the MacBook it would have been pretty similar. The Mac would have been better value due to the software that comes with it and with it being virus free, that has no price. I hate to waste days reinstalling operating systems like Windows due to malware which is hard to avoid sometimes with Windows.
So you see a simple business decision was made there - Instead of getting a machine which I would prefer - the MacBook - I went for keeping costs down and profits up. On the bright side for my Mac Usage though that decision will give me more money to buy the iMac 24 in that I want for working on the illustrations at my desk. I am planning on hanging an second monitor off the iMac so I have two 24inch screens to work with. I am going to need a bigger desk
